CC-1138, also known as "Bacara," was a clone marshal commander who served in the Grand Army of the Republic. After receiving training in the traditions and culture of the Journeyman Protectors, CC-1138 was given command of the 21st Nova Corps, which was attached to the 4th Sector Army. Eventually he was selected to be part of the initial ARC training program under the command of Alpha-17; this program allowed for the training of future generations of clone commanders, and was focused on developing the individuality of the program's participants. During this time he developed a reputation as a loner—this was due to his training in the culture of the Journeyman Protectors, as opposed to his clone brothers who had mostly been taught the ways of the Mandalorians. His loner's reputation carried over into his career as a soldier, but it never stopped him from putting the needs of his troops ahead of his own.

Upon completion of his ARC training, CC-1138 used his newly acquired knowledge to turn the Galactic Marines into a highly efficient ground unit, and the Marines eventually earned a reputation as ferocious fighters. Eventually he was assigned to Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi, and the two warriors developed a grudging respect for each other while fighting side-by-side through numerous campaigns. Following continued action in the Outer Rim Sieges, Bacara and Ki-Adi-Mundi were ordered to the snow-covered world Mygeeto, where they participated in an extended campaign of urban warfare. While stationed on Mygeeto, Bacara was given Order 66 by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and, along with his fellow Marines, gunned down Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi.

BiographyEdit

Early military careerEdit

Cloned and raised in the cloning facilities of Kamino, CC-1138 was identical to the millions of other clones who were created to serve the Republic. Having been created as a genetically modified soldier, CC-1138 was bred and trained for one thing—to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic.[1]

His initial training came from one of the few non-Mandalorian instructors recruited by the bounty hunter Jango Fett to teach the clone troopers, a former Journeyman Protector by the name of Cort Davin. CC-1138 grew to respect Davin and the lessons that the ex-Journeyman taught him and the other clones. Among the many topics that Davin imparted upon the troopers under his guidance were the traditions, history, and language of the Journeyman Protectors; he also imparted on them the Protectors' sense of duty and law, which was the foundation of the Protector way. As a result of this training, CC-1138 grew to associate with the traditions which Davin taught him, and began to think of himself as a man of law and order; this was in direct contrast with the rest of the Grand Army, which took to mirroring the Mandalorian ways of their genetic father, Jango Fett.[4]

ARC trooper trainingEdit

Upon the completion of his clone training, CC-1138 was awarded command of the 21st Nova Corps, a land-based element of the Republic's 4th Sector Army. However, after months of fighting in the Clone Wars at the head of the 21st, CC-1138 was ordered to leave the front lines, and entered into an unorthodox training regimen run by the Advanced Recon Commando known as Alpha-17. Alpha-17 had designed his training program to bring out the independence and tactical genius which was dormant within all clones; his regimen emphasized individuality and creativity, elements which had been modified in the original creation of the clone troopers—CC-1138 took to the new training with unbridled enthusiasm, and excelled at the tasks placed before him. As CC-1138 progressed through the ARC program he adopted the name "Bacara," just as many of his commander compatriots had adopted their own names. Bacara was among the program's first batch of successful graduates, as well as one of its most outspoken and independent ones, and those who graduated Alpha-17's program were awarded the title of ARC commander, becoming a tight fraternity of elite soldiers.[4]

Nonetheless, due to his previous upbringing in the traditions and culture of the Journeyman Protectors, Bacara found it increasingly difficult to relate, or even converse, with the rest of the participants of the ARC program, who preferred to communicate in Mando'a. Bacara, who had learned the Concord Dawn dialect of the Journeyman Protectors, would use "tat" during his conversations instead of the Mandalorian "vod" for brother; these minor differences caused Bacara to develop into a solitary commander who chose to keep to himself, even when surrounded by his genetic brothers. Following his return to the 21st Nova Corps, Bacara continued his choice of seclusion and became known among the 21st as being insular, but self-sufficient.[4]

However, even though he was known as somewhat of a loner, Bacara did develop a relatively close relationship with the equally stone-cold Neyo, a fellow clone and graduate of the ARC commander program. Together, the two clone commanders developed and tested special attack tactics and patterns for use with the new BARC speeder, which had recently been developed for use in the war.[4]

Shortly after Bacara's return to his unit, the 21st Nova Corps was placed under the leadership of Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi, with Bacara still acting as its commander. The 21st was also recreated into an independent formation, and was renamed the Galactic Marines.[4]

Outer Rim SiegesEdit

When Bacara returned to the war and his men, his new-found individuality spread quickly throughout the upper echelon of the Galactic Marines. Being one of the most independent and outspoken of the ARC commanders, Bacara expected nothing but the best from the soldiers under his command. Wanting only the best to serve in the Galactic Marines, Bacara would not hesitate to transfer to another unit whose troopers failed to meet his high expectations. Excellent training fostered camaraderie, and camaraderie fostered attention to detail—when soldiers developed a fraternal bond with those they served with, they often chose to take extra measures to ensure their fellow soldiers survived. Bacara used Alpha-17's training program as a guide, and drilled the Galactic Marines into an elite unit, which was often called upon to act as a quick reaction force anywhere within the galaxy. Bacara's dedication to his troops, combined with his aggressive tactics, earned the clone the admiration of his leader, the Jedi Ki-Adi-Mundi.[4]

Bacara's drilling of the Galactic Marines would eventually prove its worth during the brutal Battle of New Bornalex. The battle witnessed Bacara lead the Marines in fighting against the combined Separatist–Mandalorian defensive force; the Marines were also using a prototype strength-enhancing armor during the fighting. Mid-way through the battle, the weapons of the experimental armor failed, leaving Bacara and his Marines with only their hands to fight. Refusing to retreat, Bacara ordered his forces to continue the fight—using their enhanced strength, the Marines literally tore apart the B2 super battle droids which they were fighting, eventually decimating the enemy forces. Due to the fierce fighting that they demonstrated on New Bornalex, the Galactic Marines earned a ferocious reputation—one which Bacara was extremely proud of.[1]

As the war progressed, Bacara and his Galactic Marines saw action on dozens of worlds throughout the course of the various campaigns, from the muddy fields of Boz Pity and Aargonar to the snow-capped peaks of Rhen Var. Likewise, Bacara and Ki-Adi-Mundi also led the Galactic Marines on several worlds during the Outer Rim Sieges whose names had been lost to time. On one such world, Bacara fought alongside Ki-Adi-Mundi and Jedi Knight Rivi-Anu against an entrenched Separatist enemy who had managed to cripple a Venator-class Star Destroyer. The Star Destroyer threatened to crash on the battlefield and destroy the entire area—Rivi Anu, however, used the Force to keep the damaged ship aloft just enough to allow Ki-Adi-Mundi, Bacara, and the other Republic forces to retreat to relative safety. Once her allies had made it to safety, Anu allowed the Star Destroyer to fall, which killed her in the ensuing explosion. Following the battle, Bacara announced that he had received a transmission during the battle which ordered himself, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and the Galactic Marines to the snow-covered world of Mygeeto.[5]

Bacara and Ki-Adi-Mundi oversaw the transportation of the Galactic Marines to Mygeeto, where the InterGalactic Banking Clan had become the next target of the Republic.[5] Along with the Marines, several detachments of the 501st Legion were sent to the icy world in the execution of Project Hammertong, a top-secret mission aimed at acquiring a power crystal for a secret super-weapon of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's. Although he did not know the exact reason behind the involvement of the 501st, which was at the specific request of Palpatine, Ki-Adi-Mundi was greatly concerned about the 501st operating on Mygeeto. His reasoning being that the 501st operated outside of his control, and for a reason he could not identify, that made him feel uneasy. Bacara, however, assured Ki-Adi-Mundi that his suspicions were unfounded, and that the men of the 501st were there to simply assist them in their assault on Mygeeto.[6]

The fight for Mygeeto eventually degenerated into an extended campaign of urban fighting amid the massive ruins of the Mygeeto cityscape.[6] During the push against the Separatist forces, Bacara led his Galactic Marines in the taking of the city Jygat. This battle saw Bacara order the use of glacier-busters, a type of weapon whose seismic shocks could be felt miles away.[7][8] Along with Ki-Adi-Mundi, Bacara led the Galactic Marines through fierce firefights from house to house, slowly beginning to push the Separatist defenders back. In an effort to slow the Republic advance, the Separatists used their enormous tri-droids to lay waste to the cities. The Republic, likewise, used their artillery pieces to hammer the enemy, but managed to only aid in pounding the landscape into rubble. As a result of the incessant artillery bombardments from both sides, the skies of Mygeeto were a constantly dark gray ash which was carried by the icy winds across the planet.[6]

Order 66Edit

"Commander Bacara, execute Order Sixty-Six."
―Palpatine, to Bacara[src]

As the fighting for Mygeeto's capital city worsened, Bacara received Order 66 via an encrypted channel directly from Palpatine—Order 66 effectively labeled Ki-Adi-Mundi, along with the rest of the Jedi, as traitors and enemies of the Republic. Even though he had a grudging respect for Ki-Adi-Mundi and the other Jedi, Bacara's ultimate loyalty lay with Palpatine and the Republic, and he did not hesitate when given the order from his supreme commander.[1] As the General led the Marines in a charge against the Separatists, Bacara and the surrounding troopers stopped, raised their rifles, and gunned down the bewildered Jedi in a hail of blaster fire.[3] Bacara was later glad that he had killed the Jedi Master, as he considered the Jedi to have been traitors for trying to overthrow the government.[9]

Personality and traitsEdit

"I hesitated for a moment when I received Order 66 because the last thing I expected was a Jedi coup. Did I feel betrayed? You bet I did. I thought of all my men who died under Ki-Adi-Mundi's command, and if I'd known then that he and his buddies were gearing up to do the Separatists' work for them and overthrow the government, I'd have shot him as a traitor a lot earlier. He betrayed the trust of every one of us."
―Bacara[src]

Due to his training by the ex-Journeyman Protector Cort Davin, CC-1138 received a different upbringing than the vast majority of his clone brothers. Learning the traditions, history, and language of the Protectors, CC-1138 came to see himself not only as a soldier, but also as a lawman as prescribed by the traditions which Davin had taught him. As a result, his learning of the language of Concord Dawn alienated him from many of his fellow clones, who often chose to speak in Mando'a. This caused him to become an independent individual who was often viewed as a loner by other clones.[4]

CC-1138 was an extremely efficient clone commander, and exceeded at his natural job as a soldier bred for war. The talents that he exhibited early on in the Clone Wars allowed for him to be selected as one of only a hundred clone troopers for specialized ARC training. Under the direction of Alpha-17, CC-1138 excelled at the ARC training regimen that allowed the clones to express their individuality—in an act foreign to most clones, CC-1138 was allowed to develop his own persona and chose the name "Bacara" to express this. His ARC training enhanced his naturally aggressive tendencies, and honed Bacara into an even more finely tuned machine of war. His training and aggressiveness came to a point when he was given Order 66—even though he held a grudging respect for Ki-Adi-Mundi, his discipline and training took over, and he executed the Jedi General without question.[4]

Following his completion of Alpha-17's ARC program, Bacara instituted his own tough training program for the soldiers under his command. Under his leadership and direction, the Galactic Marines were eventually trained into a highly efficient, and elite, quick reaction force. His leadership was again demonstrated on the world of New Bornalex which saw a fierce battle erupt against the Separatist forces and the Galactic Marines under Bacara's command. During the battle the Marines found that their prototype weapons had malfunctioned, and were left with only their suit-enhanced strength to fight with. Refusing to surrender or retreat, Bacara issued the order to advance, knowing full well that that order may have resulted in the destruction of the soldiers under his command. Bacara and the Marines, however, demonstrated their bravery and dedication by fighting and destroying the enemy droids with only their hands.[1]

EquipmentEdit

Part of the Galactic Marines, Bacara participated in fierce fighting campaigns, such as the Battle of New Bornalex. During the battle, Bacara and his unit wore experimental strength-enhancing armor. Despite the prototype armor's malfunction during the battle, the defected armor allowed Bacara to engage B2 super battle droids in hand-to-hand combat.[1] After New Bornalex, Bacara began to sport Phase II clone trooper armor, which he utilized on Mygeeto.[5] Because of Mygeeto's weather conditions, the Clone Commander's helmet featured blizzard protection side plates, and his armor's leggings had kneecap armor.[10] During the early days of the Battle of Mygetto, Bacara sported a white macrobinocular on his helmet, a utility belt, and wore an ammunition pouch bandolier.[5] Later, Bacara added an anti-blast kama, and a pauldron, to his Phase II armor set. His kama and pauldron sported maroon-colored decorations.[3] Bacara carried a DC-15 blaster rifle[10] and a DC-15 blaster carbine in battle.[3]

Behind the scenesEdit

Though Bacara's numerical designation of 1138 is not mentioned in the film, it can be seen within the script for Episode III where he is identified as Commander 1138. The number itself is an obvious reference to George Lucas' first feature film, THX 1138.[11]

When CC-1138 first appeared in the film Revenge of the Sith, some fans noticed that his helmet and armor closely resembled that of the snowtroopers from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The armor that CC-1138 and the other Galactic Marines used in Episode III was, in fact, inspired by the snowtrooper designs of Episode V; building off of this inspiration, CC-1138's helmet's open-facemask design was first developed for clone tank drivers who were meant to have been operating in rough environments.[1]
